Traditional Peruvian SCISSORS DANCE

Straight out of the Peruvian highlands, Jose Navarro is probably the only practitioner in the UK of this dance style with a unique appeal; a feature of this dance is an ‘Atipanakuy’ or competition, in which each dancer perform in turn trying to outdo the other in their ability to perform ever more complex jumps and acrobatic balances, starting with simple steps which progresses to more complex and highly skilled movements, at all times accompanying skillfully percussive sounds with a pair of metal blades resembling scissors, which are held and moved by the dancer in one of his hands

The workshop includes a dance demonstration, teaching basic and advanced steps, choreography and a presentation of the participants.

This dance has been included in the UNESCO’s  ‘Intangible Heritage of the Humanity’ list
